Community & Teaching
Why does it Matter?
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
Uplifting communities starts in schools – where children are given magical keys of knowledge and skills that can change their lives. In under resourced communities education can be a challenge and teachers are often overwhelmed by large numbers of students and limited teaching material.
Antelope Park has a strong partnership with underprivileged schools in the surrounding communities. Volunteers play a critical role in helping them flourish with Classroom Support and Extra Mural activities. Our School Conservation Programmes build towards future generations championing wildlife conservation in their local areas.
Overview of the Community & Teaching Project
Volunteering in the community at Antelope Park is about so much more than lending a hand, it’s about being present, sharing compassion, and making people feel seen. Our community projects offer volunteers the chance to step into the lives of those who need support most: children with special needs, vulnerable animals, families facing hardship, and individuals too often forgotten by society.
In the nearby village of Mkoba, you’ll work in a special needs classroom where your presence can change the course of a child’s education. These are children who are falling behind in English and Maths, not because they lack potential, but because they lack support. Volunteers assist teachers by providing individual support and encouragement, helping each child regain confidence and make progress at their own pace.
Every Thursday, something magical happens at the park: a group of children from St Daniel’s Rehabilitation & Vocational Training Centre arrive for horse therapy. As they brush, ride, and bond with our gentle horses, you’ll witness the transformative power of these moments. These sessions have had an incredible impact, improving the children’s engagement, motor skills, and verbal communication. It’s healing in its purest form, made possible by you.
You’ll also have the chance to work with animals in need at the Gweru SPCA. Many of these cats and dogs have been abandoned or mistreated, and they rely on volunteer affection to regain trust in humans. Walking a dog or sitting quietly with a shy cat might seem simple, but it means the world to them.
At a local soup kitchen, you’ll prepare and serve meals to those who need them most. But it’s not just about feeding people, it’s about dancing, singing, laughing, and sharing human warmth. It’s about showing compassion and spreading joy even in the most unexpected places.
And at a local orphanage, your time spent talking, playing, and simply being there shows children that they matter. That someone cares. That they are not invisible. This is what community volunteering is all about at Antelope Park:
creating deep, meaningful connections that last long after you leave.
